Heat Related Illness Safety

Hot summer weather is upon us. Heat-related illness can be serious or even fatal, but it is preventable. It is important to take steps now so you and/or your company are prepared as temperatures rise. This information is important for anyone who has employees who work outside as well as practical advice for keeping yourself safe in extreme weather. Below are some things to consider during extreme heat:

  • Know the temperature and heat index, check it regularly throughout the day.
  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of fluids: avoid alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated soft drinks.
  • Consider an acclimatization program for un-acclimatized workers.
  • Consider increasing the length and/or frequency of rest/shade breaks.
  • If working outside dress for the conditions – sunscreen, lightweight and light-colored clothing.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.
